You can come to Paris each spring and fall for the fashion collections, you can muscle your away into the summer and winter couture shows, bringing your total visits up to a minimum of four a year, and you can spend every free moment when you are not working shopping—but face it: You are not French. You cannot, no matter how hard you try, really shop like a French girl—especially when it comes to ferreting out off-the-beaten-track, inexpensive items.
This season, grappling with this realization and desperate to garner some inside knowledge, we broke down and asked an authentic French person to share some of her secrets. And lucky for us, the adorable and consistently chic Emilie Bonnouvrier, who works in the Paris office of Vogue (no easy job during Fashion Week) has more than risen to the task!
Below, Emilie’s invaluable suggestions on how to shop like an incredibly stylish, incredibly thrifty Parisian:
Liwan 8 Rue Saint-Sulpice +33 1 43 26 07 40 “Liwan is a Middle Eastern shop owned by two amazing ladies well-known to Parisian fashion editors. You can find rings for €1, but also more upscale jewelry—I bought great earrings for €15. There is a mix of accessories, products, and clothes. The traditional Middle Eastern slippers can become the most fashionable summer shoes!”
Yaya Store 55 Rue Montmartreyayastore.fr “Yaya Store is the new Killiwatch, but much trendier. Some of their bags sell for more than €300, but you can also find clutches for €50. They also have hippie jewelry for less and amazing dresses.”
Baby Buddha 68 Rue des Saints-Pèresbaby-buddha.com “Baby Buddha is the Parisian accessory shop, with a selection from €12. They have all the French designers ‘of the moment’ such as Delphine Delafon (for bags) and Jacquie Aiche (for jewelry).”
Doursoux 3 Passage Alexandredoursoux.com “Doursoux offers ready-to-wear pieces from €50 to €150, inspired by their exclusive military surplus collection. Ask for Remy.”
Mimi’s Beer 57 Rue de Bretagnemimisbeer.com “My friend who works at another French fashion magazine recommends Mimi’s Beer for cheap clothes (from €30). She told me the selection is very good, and I trust her 100 percent!” New Look Forum des Halles 1 Rue Pierre Lescotnewlook.com “The giant New Look brand, even cheaper than H&M, exists all over the world but not in the United States.”
Petit Bateau 26 Rue Vavinpetit-bateau.fr “Petit Bateau is available in the U.S., but in France they have done a collaboration with Carven (dresses around €200).”
